Get lower costs and price protection with Griddy’s Solar Partnerships
Everyone knows that installing solar panels is a great way to lower your monthly electricity bill, but not everyone knows how solar panels work with Griddy’s wholesale electricity (TL;DR it works freaking awesome together). Here’s why we love solar:
1. Natural correlation between solar production and high prices
First and foremost, solar panels provide energy when you need it the most. Prices are usually the highest from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm, and solar panels provide your home with a no-marginal-cost source of electricity during those times when prices are high. We looked at 2019 and found that the average price during the sunny hours vs. the dark hours was like day and night.
- Average “sunny hour” price (between 7:00 am - 7:00 pm): 5.3¢/kWh
- Average “dark hour” price (between 7:01 pm - 6:59 am): 2.0¢/kWh
That’s an energy-only price that is almost three times higher during the sunny hours – when your solar panels are giving you electricity for free.
2. Become a net generator when prices spike and get paid up to $9.00/kWh
One of things we hate the most here at Griddy is when prices spike. However, with solar on your roof, you actually might welcome those spikes, as you can export to the grid and get paid that very high market price in the form of an energy credit. So when prices spike, you can either keep using electricity knowing that your solar is providing you with free electricity or you can turn off as much as you can, export it to the grid and have that one $9.00 hour pay for hundreds of hours of free electricity for you in the future as you bank that electricity credit.
The only way to get that market value for your solar generation is through wholesale, like with Griddy. Other electricity providers will use net metering to simply give you a kWh credit. But with Griddy, that one spike per kilowatt hour can be worth hundreds of kilowatt hours.
3. Become more self-sufficient, gain more control over your household
While Griddy and solar panels won’t let you control your teenagers’ social media addiction or help you control your toddlers’ tantrums, it will help you gain a lot more control over your house by allowing you to be less reliant on the grid. Having solar panels means that you’re making your own power and proverbially taking back your power from the grid. You are more in control.
4. Renewable energy reduces your carbon footprint
We’re not going to get too granola on you here, but one of the great features of solar panels is that they are a renewable source of clean energy. We know that when prices are high, dirty coal-fired peaker plants come out full force. Having solar panels helps you reduce your carbon footprint and may even contribute to fewer instances of coal-fired plants booting up and sending their carbon-heavy electricity into the grid.

Details of Net Metering vs Griddy’s Solar Program
Most people are familiar with net metering. Net metering is a specific way of crediting solar where the customer gets credited for their full fixed-rate (energy and TDU delivery) for all generation. With net metering, all that matters is the customer's fixed rate and their net total usage over the entire month after generation has been subtracted out. It doesn't matter when the usage or generation takes place – you always get credited the same total all-in rate for your generation.
But at Griddy, you get a credit for the real-time rate, for whatever it is at that time of day. If energy-prices are 3¢/kWh, you will get credited that amount. But if it’s a hot summer day and prices jump to say, 30¢/kWh, you will get a credit for that amount.
We credit the full amount for all generation up to your usage in each 15-minute interval. Any excess generation above your usage in that 15-minute interval gets credited for energy-only.
Generally speaking, this is very beneficial for people who have solar panels that cover 0-80% of their expected energy usage. For those folks who install solar panels to cover more than 80% of their expected energy usage, it might be better to have a traditional energy provider who can do net metering instead. If you have solar panels that cover more than 80% of your expected energy usage, Griddy still might be your best bet, but that depends on your capacity to reduce consumption during high-spike times so you can become a net generator and really capitalize on those kWH you’re producing and selling back into the grid.
Example of Net Metering vs Griddy Solar
A customer has no usage and no generation throughout the month except for one 15-minute interval where they have 1 kWh of usage (electricity only price of 1c/kWh) and another 15-minute interval where they have 1 kWh of generation (electricity only price of 3c/kWh).
- Net Metering: The customer will receive zero charges for this month.
- Griddy Solar: The member would get charged for 1 kWh of energy at the real-time price for that first 15-minute interval (1c/kW) as well as TDU delivery charges for 1 kWh. The member would also get a credit for energy-only for 1 kWhs of generation at the real-time rate of electricity (3c/kWh) during that second 15-minute interval. The member will receive a credit of 2c/kWh for electricity only and will be charged 1 kWh of TDU delivery.
