Griddy’s IFTTT Integration Revolutionizes Electricity Again

We were already the first to connect consumers to the wholesale electricity market, but now we have a new technology to once again revolutionize the industry: Our members can now automate their smart home devices based on the price of electricity. What’s great about this? Well, anytime price spikes happen, your smart home devices (Nest, Honeywell, ecobee, etc.) can now automatically adjust power consumption to save you even more money. So, we invite you to check out our new smart home automation technology through our first integration with IFTTT.  It’s a Griddy IFTTT integration – a (G)IFTTT for our members!

What’s IFTTT and why is it so important?

IFTTT is a platform that stands for “if this then that” and can automate all the devices and services you use in your day-to-day life. Instead of monitoring the wholesale price yourself to see if prices spike to adjust your usage, you can now automate it. So, IF the price of electricity is above 30¢/kWh, THEN you can automate your thermostat to turn off. Heck, you could even set it up so IF the price goes below 0¢/kWh THEN you can turn on your disco ball and stereo and really have a party.Based on our calculations, an average user could save around an additional $100 a year just by automating a smart thermostat. But depending on how much energy you use, what rules you put in place and what other smart home devices you have, that number could jump to $400-$500 a year.

How to use the Griddy Applet?

We’ve created 16 pre-built applets that turn on and off the most used smart devices depending on the price of electricity. They work with:

  • ecobee
  • Honeywell Home AC
  • SmartThings
  • Hue lights
  • LIFX lights

But for those that would like more customization, we also made two triggers so you can create your own applets:

  1. Trigger based on when the price of electricity changes
  2. Trigger when the price normalizes

Other things to automate

While automating your smart thermostat is the most obvious choice, there are plenty of other things you can do with IFTTT to stay on top of your energy consumption:

  • For customized price alerts, you can send an SMS message when the price goes above or below your desired threshold.
  • You can log all price changes into a Google Sheet to keep track of spikes.
  • You can have a lamp with a red LED bulb turn on when prices spike so everyone at home will know what’s going on.
  • You can charge your car with a WeMo outlet when prices are really low.

Working toward an intelligent home

This is the first of many applets to help integrate with the intelligent home and take home automation to the next level. It’s one thing to own a Nest, but so much more powerful to have it work for you AND save you money. But integrating with IFTTT isn’t just about saving money. There is a strong correlation between the high price of electricity and the amount of dirty energy on the grid. When there is a lot of demand mixed with little generation, then the grid will turn on these costly and dirty peaker plants to keep up. But, if we can automatically turn off or down devices when demand is getting high, then we can combat the need for those pesky peaker plants. Remember, when it’s cheapest, its greenest.Let us know in the comments below what else you would like to see with IFTTT and the intelligent home. We’d love to hear from you!

You will continue to be able to control you Nest via IFTTT through August 31. But don't worry, we are already working on alternative solutions to support our Nest-using members with smart home automation.
