Let’s Get to Know… Our VP of Product

We love hearing from and getting to know our members, so we figured it’s time to return the favor! With that in mind, we’re going to start a new segment on our blog where we interview individuals from each department starting with our VP of Product, Eric Shen. 

You may be asking yourself, what does the VP of Product do? Well, let me tell you! 

The VP of Product is responsible for creating the product vision and driving the innovation that Griddy is built upon. So super important! 

With that being said, let's get to know Eric Shen!

Tell us 2 fun facts about yourself.

  1. My Instagram feed is populated primarily with corgis. 
  2. I've moved 11 times across 5 states (CA, NY, DC, TX, WA) in the last 18 years.

What is your most-used emoji?

Do you have a favorite animal?

My favorite animal is the Japanese Dwarf Flying Squirrel because it's too adorable for this world.  My favorite animal that I could actually do anything about is my (future) pet corgi, Mooncake.

If you had to delete all but three apps from your smartphone, which ones would you keep?

I would keep...

  1. Griddy (because it's my baby) 
  2. Waze because I have the navigational proficiency of a small cactus wrapped in a burlap sack
  3. The camera app because I have to take photos of all the food I eat. On an unrelated note, no one asks me to dinner anymore.

Tell us a little bit about your background in the industry.

My first product management job was working on Words With Friends, way back in 2011. Since then, I've worked on a range of mobile apps that collectively have been downloaded by more than 300 million people and generated over $500 million in revenue over their lifetimes. I joined Griddy in late 2019 and it is my first foray into the energy sector, and I'm excited to bring a slew of improvements to the Griddy product on both mobile and web. 

What drew you to Griddy?

I believe the Griddy model is the best way for a user to get their electricity. Traditional electricity providers take advantage of the consumer, trying to get them to use energy when wholesale prices are low so they can make money off the spread, while urging conservation only when wholesale prices are high to save themselves a buck. When the consumer has direct access to the wholesale market, NOW the free market does what it's supposed to do and people can respond to the right incentives, help the grid be more efficient when demand is high, and save themselves a bundle of money over the course of their lifetime with Griddy.

Where do you think Griddy can improve?

Right now the Griddy App experience does a decent job of what it's currently built to do: show the Griddy member the real-time price of electricity in your load zone, and give you a little bit of historical context. 

But what Griddy will do soon is vastly broader. It will give you detailed, custom insight into your energy consumption profile, and give you the tools to take advantage of wholesale prices that best fit each Griddy member's lifestyle and energy needs. 

You can think of Griddy 1.0 as the sign on the side of the road that posts the price of gas. The next version will be the Uber that picks you up from your house and takes you to Savings Town.

What is your vision for Griddy moving forward?


My vision for Griddy is for it to become the essential tool for understanding and controlling a household's energy consumption.  That means real-time usage analysis, smart home device integration, automatic control of key drivers of energy consumption, insights into how to improve your energy efficiency, lower your electricity bill, and reducing your environmental impact.
